Nope. They mostly find it uncomfortable to run in. That is the reason why they always "cover the main base" during a free kick. And I do remember many football matches where players clutched their groin in agony due to boots or soccer balls (no pun intended) hitting them.
And I do remember a player called Vinnie Jones (former Wimbledon man and current film actor who you'll probably remember from movies like Swordfish, Snatch, Eurotrip and X3 ) who did something to the groin of Paul Gascoigne.... wait a minute... here is the photo.

No - they are too intrusive when you are trying to do all the other things a footballer has to do.
