Go to the system console, if its a PC go to the " Command " prompt, and if its a BSD / Linux box go to the terminal.

Type the command "netstat" . This command displays the connections between your computer and the Internet. If there are a large number of connections, then there is a DOS attack targetted at you, if you see any suspicious connections from anonymous hosts, it could be a hacking attempt to compromize your computer.

You can install Zone Alarm to keep your computer safe from attacks. But it is very CPU intensive, you should have a powerful CPU.

You are always being tracked (http://www.eff.org/att/).

If you want to know beyond that it can be very difficult. If a hacker is able to get between you and what you are requesting (called a man in the middle attack), you may have no clue at all.

If you are being tracked by software on your system you should be able to see it in your task manager and anti-spyware / anti-virus programs will usually pick it up.

If it is a root kit (look up Sony BMG root kit to find out more about these) it will be hidden completely unless you get a very intense program to clean it out (root kit revealer is one I have heard of).

Simplest way... go to Task Manager (right click on the bottom desktop bar and click on Task Manager)

In Task Manager, go to the User tab. This lists all users connected to this computer. If this is your home computer, you should be the only one connected. If you see more, than it's time to investigate
