Everyone is going to recommend you see your doctor, but you asked for the *first* step.
Before you do anything else, please read _Taking Charge of Your Fertility_ by Toni Weschler. It will help you determine if you have certain problems that could interfere with getting pregnant and give you information that will give you the best possible chance. Even if you *do* need medical help in conceiving, it will save you time, money, and discomfort when you do have tests and treatment.
I hope this helps. Good luck!!

You haven't said why you can't get pregnant. If you mean you've been trying but it hasn't worked...
Your regular Dr. can be a good first step. They make sure your you are timing your attempts correctly (many people don't) They can do testing to check for things like making sure you are ovulating, testing how high certain chemicals are in your body that can make it difficule to concieve( ie. fsh), and ultrsound can also sow some potential problems. In addition your partner should also see a Dr. and have things like sperm count and motility and morphology checked.
If no challenges are found and you still don't get pg or if they do find challenges you will probably be refered to a fertility specialist and/ or a urologist. a fertility Dr. wil run tests like a HSG where they run fluid inside you to check for blockages or obstructions. If things are a go they may give you a drug like clomid that will cause and extra egg or two to be produced to give you a better chance at one getting fertilized ( a healthy female has only a %27 chance of getting pg each month) the next step might be an IUI where they inject the sperm into the uterus at the right time to give it a head start. If those don't work they may suggest an invetro procedure but that is a long way off.
Good Luck

You can get ovulation kits at the grocery store for about $20. They have about a month's worth of sticks. When you ovulate, you will get a positive reading and you have between 6 hrs and 48 hours to get pregnant. Generally, you ovulate around the 14th day after the first day of your period if you have a very regular cycle. You may also be able to tell when you are ovulating because you will be ....wetter? than usual. Also, pay attention to your mood. If there is a day around the 14th day that you feel more like going out and dressing up and you are looking at men, you probably are ovulating. Also, in timing conception it may be helpful to know that Girl sperm can supposedly last a few days while boy sperm swims faster and dies out quicker. Fertility people will tell you to let the little guys stay in there for a half hour or so before you get up and more around much. Also, missionary position reportedly allows for deepest penetration and thus the best chance that sperm can find the egg.
If you are having sex and still can't get pregnant, talk to your doctor about testing. Lots of guys have low sperm counts these days for whatever reason. Also, very common for women to have tissue growth that closes the fallopian tubes. This can cause problems. Or bad tissue growth in the uterus that makes it difficult for a feritlized egg to hold on.
Get prenatal vitamins at the store and start taking them now. If you do concieve, the baby is going to need folic acid in order to properly develop the spine in the first 28 days. It is usually deficient in women and a lot of times you won't even know you are pregnant until you are well into the 28 days.
Good luck!

Step 1: think it through and answer certain key questions such as:
1. Do you want to raise a child alone, or do you want a spouse to help?
2. What age child do you want to begin with, e.g. infant, youngster, young child, etc.
3. How much will it take to raise this child to maturity; and how will you generate those resources?
4. How will you expand your lifestyle to include a child as the center of your living?
5. When you need help, who will you turn to?
The answers to these questions are you first step.

First of all I hope you are married and it is agreed on both sides. I tried for years and when I thought I could not, I took up a hobby to get my mind off of having a baby and as soon as I did that, I became pregnant. I was concentrating to hard on getting pregnant. Well I hope this helps, trusting that you are married.

If you have been trying for a year or longer...then you should make an appointment with your ob/gyn for a fertility workup. He/she can help pinpoint what the issue might be for you. Note that the average couple can take 6-9 months to conceive.

Depends on why you can't get pregnant. A good book in general is "Taking Charge of Your Fertility"--it discusses reasons for infertility and various options.

If you have taken the birth control pill for a length of time or you've had an abortion (and damage to the uterus), it may not be possible. There are many methods if this is not the case.

If you've been trying for a while, go see your doctor to make sure everything is working like it should. Your partner should go too.
