Fanfiction is taking characters from a story, movie, tv show, etc and making your own story with them. Your story can be canon (take place in the same world as the original work and the characters can act the same) or AU (alternate universe where you have free range to do anything to the characters). There are a lot of different types of fanfics and anything you want to read is out there. I suggest fanfiction.net .

Fan fiction is a broadly defined term for fiction about characters or settings written by fans of the original work, rather than the original creators. Fan fiction usually describes works which are uncommissioned by the owner of the work, and not professionally published. Fan fiction is defined against original fiction, which exists with its own discrete universe, and against canon works within the universe. Most fan fiction writers assume that their readers have knowledge of the canon universe their works are based in.

Fan fiction is original stories based on characters or a universe already established by another author, TV series, movie etc.

Technically, it's illegal. You're usually taking licensed characters and using them for your own purposes - even if you don't make a dime off the story.

Most franchises don't really care, though. Some even encourage it. J.K. Rowling's disapproval hasn't stopped a thriving Harry Potter "fandom" as it's know in the fan fiction world.

Writing fan fiction can be a great way to learn about how to write plots without having to worry about establishing your own characters or setting. It's also a way for avid fans to explore "what ifs" and "what happened afters."

Let's say you are a Star Trek fan but have read everything out there...well, you can write your own Star Trek episode and send it to a fan magazine where they might print it. That is fan fiction.

It is when people write a story in the universe of a certain series of books. It's not sanctioned by the author and it's not meant to be published. It's a way to get others to constructively criticize your writing abilities.
