Like all groups, their support of their party is aimed at greed. Democratic administrations give preferential treatment to Union labor bids. I do not feel it is that much of a burden on the party as the GOP gives preferential treatment to "connected" companies ( Haliburton...egl).
The Democratic party is hurt by itself as it has no platform, it has become a party of "buying votes" and pandering.
I think Joe Biden has a good shot at turning the party around should he run in 2008.

unions hurt this country, period! In a consumer economy, unions should be unnecessary. If the job stinks, go somewhere else and work. It seems that unions were necessary in an age where information was slower to travel and be heard, but in our day, with the Internet and a zillion other media outlets, people are more aware of their choices and rights than ever. Therefore, the union has become an outdated machine that slows progress and protects the weak union members, the strong do not need it, they can be hired anywhere at any time! And that is the straight truth!
