Because they played Portugal. They had vengeance in their veins for EURO 2004, instead of concentration on the game. Plus the Portuguese played better.

Two reason from two sources: British GQ and Soccernet:
BGQ - These guys still drink a lot, and see themselves and gentlemen athletes. Becks is one who takes it very seriously, but there are others who are less committed to winning.
Soccernet editorial: They can't use their left foot. All their good shots come off the right foot, and that limits their effectiveness on the world stage.
Either reason - if true - is troubling. Put together it spells disaster.

Poor squad selection from Ericksson meant we were never likely to win the tournament. Only 4 fit strikers two unfit and one 17 year old yet to play in the Premiership. Good riddance to a man who has cost this country millions yet never delivered.
