I'm no expert. But in my humble opinion, they are much more than just rock. They have a gothic presentation with an almost classical flare. The piano adds such a brilliant and unique dimension.

they're neither. they're FM-pleasant rock. Gothic rock would not sound some thing like Evanescence. Your pal could pay interest to some Gothic rock sometime to substantiate this. Evanescence is not gothic music.
They are rock, more specifically alternative metal.
Gothic music includes bands such as Bauhaus and the Cure, which Evanescence sounds nothing like.

obviously no one who answered this question knows what it means to be Gothic. Gothic is more of style and I don't want to say its a belief but..... its hard to explain I have Gothic friends and their..... just depressed. But Evanescence defiantly has to be ROCK.

It's rock, but with gothic singing and lyrics. Evanesence is a Canadian artist that writes about gothic views but I would say it's pretty mcuh rock.

The music itself is in the genre of "Rock"... they dress rather dark or gothic.
