Homosexuality was considered very normal in ancient Greece - it was traditional that before a man married he had a relationship with another man. However, this was supposed to be put aside when he married (this is described in Greek plays such as works by Aristophanes and also later by the satirist Juvenal). Lesbianism takes it's name from a Greek island, Lesbos, and a female poet (who happened to be a lesbian) called Sappho (hence sapphic) who lived there. So, 'Lesbo was a greek god' is incorrect, but the name does come from Greece.
Because this was such a normal part of everyday life in ancient Greece, these attitudes were also attributed to their Gods. Apollo especially was known to have affairs with men, which fits with his profile as a young and vigorous man - the time of life in which ancient Greek men had affairs with men.
To the person above who is Greek and proud of it, you should be - ancient Greece left a culture of knowledge that has been invaluable to modern society. However, homosexuality was part of it and I think the tolerance of the ancient Greeks is a good learning point, not something to be ashamed of.

Actually, Zeus had Ganymede- He was to be a youth that he liked very well and he made him the cup bearer of the Gods. Some stories make him to be a female. There is also Apollo who had many male loves. Pan- A patron to a lot of gay wiccans. But just as someone else said...they swung both ways.

Nope! And as for babysisterch's answer, i believe she's referring to the myth about the birth of the goddess of wisdom,Athena(Minerva in Latin). The myth: An oracle had told Zeus that his pregnant wife would give birth to a child who would dethrone him,so Zeus -to avoid that-swallowed his wife. After that he started having horrible headaches and asked another god to relieve him from the pain by splitting his head in two with an ax.And out came Athena who became Zeus' fav child because he actually gave birth to her.Greeks worshipped her as goddess of wisdom because she came out of Zeus' head. The Parthenon in Athens(which in Greek is "Athena") was a temple of Athena. The goddess was the protector of the city and that's why bore(and still does!!)her name.

Of course. Most of the Greek gods swung both ways.
As for Emily and Thomas M, don't be afraid of your heritage. Honestly, learn about it and accept that some greek gods were pederasts.

Well, there are many stories of Gods that hint at homosexual tendencies. Zeus abducted Ganymede because he was so "beautiful". Considering the Greeks views on homosexuality, it isn't so surprising.

And if it wasnt for Greeks, we wouldnt have now democracy, comedy, tragedy, laws and lots of others that make our society what it is!
