1. Your Internet Speed
2. Internet traffic on your network.
3. The internet connection speed of the remote site you are downloading from.
4. What your computer is doing at the time you're downloading. (If your copying a very large file AND have a very fast internet connection to a site with a very fast internet connection, you COULD affect the download speed. But for MOST people's home internet connection, this will not be a problem.
5. How many others are trying to download the same file you are at that moment.
For example: If your internet connection speed is 6 Mb download, and you are trying to download a 48 MB file, but the place you are downloading from only has a 1 Mb upload speed, your effective download speed is AT BEST 1 Mb assuming no other users of the download source are downloading at the same time. If 3 other people are trying to download it at the same time, then the best you'll get is going to be around 250 K (1/4 of 1 Mb), at least for PART of the downlaod.

hp 256 mb memory 700 mhz dell 2 GB memory core 2 duo 2 ghz just tried both on same download. both were about 500kb/sec on a 5 mb cable connection. If you have a high speed connection slow downloads are usually due to the source. Basically download speeds are really slow even compared to a slower computer. My internet connection speed is about 4900 kb/s, but that isn't the speed a download comes in. If you are talking about surfing websites and "downloading " webpages or videos, not files, then the speed of the computer would have more of an effect. older computers could be loaded down with junk and seem slower too. my HP has a fairly new install.

Obviously, the speed of your internet will affetc the spped of download.. if u have a line connection then it will be unstable and slow but a DSL connection would give you a lot better results. Other things that affect it are:
1. Other downloads being done simultaneously
2. Other webpages being loaded, especially the heavy ones.
3. Other internet based programs running eg. limewire or MSN
4. The stability of the server at that time.
Mine is the best answer by far.. isnt it?

Interenet speed, RAM, and also clock speed, your internet might be fast, but your computer is a piece of crap, it will only accept so much per second, for the most part, computers can handle whatever the interent speed wants to download at.
