My wife and I recently found out that we are going to be having a child. She is a little over 7 weeks pregnant and has been feeling mild symptoms. The question refers to a trip we had planned for early August.

We are going to Peru August 4-13th. Its high-altitude and a third world country. The trip would put her at 12 weeks-- almost into her second trimester. What are the risks we are taking? and is it advisable that she doesn't go?

The trip is pretty important for both of us-- we are missionaries to Peru and the location we're going to is going to be where we are living in about a year. But, I don't want to put my wife or our new child in any kind of danger.

From the research I've done and asked a few doctor friends (we're still waiting for an appt with her doc), the high-altitude is not as big of a deal as the 'third-world' country thing is. IF something were to happen (miscarry) in Peru, she could possibly be lacking the appropiate medical attention. What's your advice?

I wouldn't worry about it unless you are going to a place where you are supposed to get some kind of vaccine or filter your water. When I went to Venezuela, we had to take anti-malaria medications and filter our water. Probably not the ideal situation for a first trimester pregnant woman. So many things can go wrong then.

I would definitely talk to the dr and get his opinion. I, personally, would probably play it safe rather than sorry and not go, but that is definitely your decision.

People all over the world have babies safely every minute of the day. It's just that we tend to hear about the disasters. I can't speak about altitude, but I don't see why Peru should be too much of a problem compared to other countries, although I suppose it might depend on where you go. I have heard though that you shouldn't fly from 7 months pregnant onwards. You are used to the UK standards, so it is natural to worry. However, miscarriages also happen here. Please try to relax, and take it easy. As long as your wife is sensible, then she should be OK in my opinion. It is so exciting to be pregnant, and good luck with your mission and the baby

When my sister was about 16 weeks pregnant, she flew somewhere and ended up throwing up pretty much the entire flight. She felt very sick afterward. BUT then again, every pregnancy is different. Good luck
