When Republicans and Democrats describe our nation as a “democracy,” they turn their back on the U.S. Constitution, and bring dishonor to the millions of Americans who sacrificed their lives to protect the republic that was established in this land over 200 years ago.

Last year during a speech on Iranian issues, Bush said, “We believe, that the voice of the people ought to be determining policy, because we believe in democracy.” John Adams was graphically vocal about democracy saying, “Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There was never a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.”

The job of elected officials, legislators, and appointed judges is to protect the rights outlined in the Constitution, not grant rights based on opinion polls, blogs, and festooned political cheerleaders on broadcast television and radio. A republic requires altruistic service and care from government leaders. It is time to put leaders in office that will not use their power to further erode the republic entrusted to us by the Founding Fathers.

A republic is has a representative government. The people run the government through elected representatives that represent a certain geographical area. The U.S. Senate, whose representatives were originally chosen by the state legislatures, is a republican form of representation.

A democracy is a popular government. The people either vote directly or through representatives. The number of representatives in a democracy is determined by the population. The U.S. House of Representatives is an example of democratic representation.

The majority of the founding fathers were in favor of a republican form of representation and feared that a pure democracy would allow the majority to dominate the minority. Because there was a strong group of influence that preferred a democracy the framers of the Constitution established a new form of government: Democratic Republic.

republic means there is

1) no monarch
2) the power is in the hands of some people or some elected representatives

democracy means the same but with

1) equality for all
2) one person one vote

just to make that clear:
back in the roman times as well they were a Republic.
But not every person got to vote, only some. Still, they didn't have a king as such, the top guy had to be elected (by those who had the right to do so). This all changed when Ceaser came to power and it became an Empire rather than a republic.

Nowadays, the US is also a republic. But everybody over 18 years of age can vote, men, women, blacks, whites, etc. That's why it is also a democracy.

They're not opposites or mutually exclusive. The US's form government is a democratic republic, so they clearly can coexist. All that "republic" refers to is that the head of state is not a hereditary position, such as a king or queen. Thus, the US is a republic, but Britain is not and China is. "Democracy" denotes that the government is elected in some form by the people (its Greek root means rule by the people). So, the United States is a democracy, as is Britain, but China is not.

Republic is a generic term for a government ruled by more than one person (as opposed to a dictatorship). To get more specific, for example, there are Federal republics (like the U.S.), Federation republics (Russia), and People's republics (China).

Democracy has to do with rule by the people. So China is a republic, but it is not a democracy.

By definition, a republic is a system of government controlled by elected leaders, like the U.S. A democracy is a system of government in which every single person votes on every single thing--I don't think this has been used since ancient Greece.
