73 hit by the cheater himself, Barry Bonds. As far as I'm concerned, though, the record is 61. Roger Marris is the true single season leader who was never tainted by steroids.

I believe it is 72 set by Mark Mcguire, but i think this record and many others over the last decade are tainted due to substance abuse.
although i am not 100% sure of what the number is a previous person i think had it accurate at 70.
so in my mind it is still Roger Maris who hold the record, if Ben Johnson the former canadian sprinters record was stripped then the same should be done in baseball and any other sport where substance abuse is discovered. But however before they can discover it they have to have testing in place!

Maris had it with 61 for 37 years. Then McGuire broke it in 98 with 70. *Sosa hit 66 that year. Then Bonds broke it hitting 73. It hasnt been very closed to being approached since they started testing for steroids.
