I asked my new boss what are my responsabilities and he said I need to be proactive? What does this mean? How do I do this?

It means that your boss does not intend to spell things out for you. You need to be able to anticipate his needs. For example, if you see on your bosses calendar that he has a meeting coming up with 5 other people, you should already know that you need to reserve a room, order food (if it is a lunch meeting and it is something that is normally expected in your company) confirm with all participants and schedule a meeting with your boss to get an agenda together. He should not have to tell you this. That is what is meant by being proactive.

It means if a guest comes in to talk to him and notes are needed, be ready for it. It means, if stacks of forms are on his desk ask him if he needs them filed.

Basically, it means for you to learn the business and the way it is conducted well enough so that he doesn't have to tell you what to do.

Always think, what's next the next thing he needs to do, then either ask him if he wants it done, or just do it, depending on his preferance.

Being executive's assistant is not an easy job. Every mistake you make will be a big one. But you can also be an invaluable asset to him. It all depends on how well you learn the business.

There is a saying "do you want a man who is in charge, or do you want someone who knows what's going on." This is really true in most companies.

It means to have a pen and paper always available to take notes! If he calls you in his office have it ready to write down any instructions he may have. Also, a good little tip is to at the end of the day email or have a paper showing what all was accomplished that day. That way he knows what is going on, and that you are worth what he is paying you. Also, make sure you spell check everything you do! It is just a click of a button!

to be proactive you need to understand the company's paradigm. And also understand that your boss uses phrases to sound important.

This is technical talk for him telling you he doesn't want to have to tell you what to do all day long. In other words, look busy.

He wants you to anticipate problems before they arise and take care of them for him.
