I live in a metropolitan city in Minnesota. I have noticed women aged 18 to 35 respond positively to courteous behavior from the opposite sex. A typical example would be letting a woman enter a bus first, giving up one's seat for a woman or opening a door or letting a woman walking the opposite direction through a door first.
Yet I have almost consistently found women aged 40 – 55 respond with a sullen face or complete ignorance to the subtleties regarding courteous behavior. Why do older women behave this way? Is the same true for older men?

Because they have figured out that love is not what it is cracked up to be. Men never grow up and then when they reach 40 they leave you for someone who is young enough to be their daughter. You are blamed for everything from mom where is my car keys to honey where is the check book. Even thought they don't want anymore children they still have a period that seems to be getting worse and worse as the years go by. Their children start bring home their children.. then they have to raise them. They get no help from their husbands or children in dealing with the anything to do with the house. They have spent all there lives taking care of other people and putting themselves last. So how old does the woman have to be before she can start putting herself first.. They are just fed up with life in general.

When in a matter of time you will be pulled off the shelf due to wrinkle, menopause, varicose vein and more, It becomes very hard not to give the world a half of the peace sign. In the contrary, older men behave nicely. They cannot afford to be rude knowing they are no longer all that. Smile and courteous behavior may qualify them to a nice conversation.

My mother is in that age range and has been for awhile so I've kinda figured it out. When in that age are at the point where they're starting to *feel* older and more mature. With this comes a sense of "I've payed my dues, now look the hell out". Like in the movie Green Fried Tomatoes "I'm older and have better insurance."

Excuse me, ME AND MY FRIENDS ARE in the lower part of this group, and we DO NOT respond this way. Some may do, Yeah, menapause could be an excuse, they could be having a bad day, they could have just seen some 20something looking like she use to. And yes sometimes older men act the same ways for similar reasons.

I don't know; maybe because they're getting older and becoming lonely. the feel as though their youth is gone and why waste time being nicer to other people when they could get all the respect.

I think older women are a little more cynical and many feel that nothing comes for nothing.
