If you define a lie as not telling the truth then it is a lie. Now whether or not it is moral to tell this sort of lie is a completely different question.
Suppose you were in Germany during WWII and you knew your neighbor was Jewish and the SS come to question you. They ask you, "Are there any Jews is this neighborhood?" To be truthful under this circumstance would be immoral, in my opinion, where as the lie would be moral.

a lie is a lie. The person you are protecting will probably find out after all and then wonder why you didn't warn them. Truth is generally the best policy.

Yes....but it's ok to lie to protect someone...that's what family and friends are for.....as long as you're not protecting a murderer, child molester, child abuser, animal abuser, wife beater, rapist or someone who hurt a little old lady.
