Hey folks, just for the record,"lead" is not the past tense of "lead." That word is "led." The "lead" that is pronounced like "led" is the soft, weighty metal sinkers and solder are made of.

lead - i lead him to the pond
proofread - i proofread my paper
tread - i tread water
put - i put it there
hit - i hit the ball
swat - i swat the bug
and pretty much any adjective - just put is or was in front of it (he is fat, he was fat)
