How do I upholster a sofa?

How do you upholster a sofa, what items are needed, how much fabric should I buy? Or am I better off buying a slipcover, but they never seem to fit right.

It's a lot of work - I recommend that you go to the bookstore and look in the craft/sewing section; they have upholstery books on it. You will see pictures of the tools and get an idea of how much of an undertaking it will be, depending on the size of your couch.
