Why do women use subtle (to men)hints?

And can you give us some pointers on picking up these things. Yes, it's very general I know, but in our own language we don't hint we say/make it obvious- if it's important to be understood then unambiguous seems to us to be the way to go

I speak a few languages, if I'm talking with someone who is not a native English speaker I'll make it more simple for them, and usually viceversa

Men are taught from childhood to speak what is on their minds, to be direct/forceful and to have an opinion is the way to get what they want. (to be Manly)

Females are taught to act coy, to speak in a passive way and to say things that suggest what they want. (to be feminine)

This comes across in writing styles as well. I grade University level papers and I can tell the gender of an author just by reading their writing styles and be 90% accurate.

Women like to know that there man does things because they are thinking of there women and if she throws a little hint out there to pick up on it is now the challenge. Now it shows you dont only care but you listen to her too. Its a game and sometime a disappointing one for her but nevertheless its played. I say listen to her thoughts and ideas and read between the lines at times. If she said wow thats nice i would really like that but does not ask you for it (depending on the amount of interest and excitement expressed ) she prob wants you to get it but don't want to ask you for it. Presents that come from the heart are the best even if you have to guide them a bit.

Because not being direct saves from direct rejection and embarrassment. Saves people's feelings. That's why women behave that way. To preserve people's feelings.
