How about the Point Roma Inn:
619) 222-4704

2933 Fenelon St
San Diego, CA 92106

Cross Street:
Between Rosecrans St and Scott St

This Inn is a real find - it is centrally located very close to expensive hotels, but is half the price with probably twice the accomodations. The proprietors were very accomodating as we arrived late at night and checked out early in the morning. Our room had a fridge/freezer, a microwave, a large dining table, and there is DIY laundry on-site. There was no air-conditioning, but that is typical in San Diego and a fan was provided, along with an ironing board and iron. We rented a car for our own trip schedule, but this inn is located very close to prime destinations including Shelter & Harbor Islands and anything downtown, like the Gaslamp Quarter or Balboa Park, or the airport. The rooms face the parking lot and street and it was quiet at night - the fan drowned out any noise. This is a great place to stay, especially for people who would rather spend money on more lasting pleasures than a brand-name hotel room. We would definitely stay here again when we return to San Diego.

Try Extended Stay America. They should have something in your price range, but San Diego is expensive. Something to cheap can land you in bang-bang city.
