The easiest way is to go limestreet station, pay 20 quid to get a student rail card, then take virgin train to london Euston which will take you about a little more than 3 hrs (15 past every hour and the previous poster was wrong and there is direct train between london and liverpool). London is about 20-30% more expensive than the rest of the country. London is definitely a must see. I would recommend you go week days so you can get cheaper hotel. However, I personally like north west much more than south. Manchester, Southport, Blackpool, Preston, Bolton, and Bury are all close by and you can easily do a day trip. I take you are probably studying in Edge Hill Tech or L'pool Univ. and I hope you begin to understand scouse accent. See if you want to contact me for more info.

In distance, about 30 miles. If you drive, the M62 can be a bit of a nightmare - give yourself about an hour. If you're getting the train, you can get a quick one (35-40 minutes) or a lazy one (60-70 minutes). I'd recommend the train as you can be right in the centre of both cities (Liverpool Lime Street and Manchester Piccadilly) very easily. A return ticket costs about £9.
They are both fantastic cities, so make the most of them!
