5 minutes a day, set the timer. Don't work more than 5 minutes.
With your 5 minutes do just one thing:
Straighten bookshelf
Hang up clothes
Change bed linens
Put away shoes
Wipe off surfaces
Vacuum
Organize stuff on surfaces...
Throw away trash.

Just one thing a day for 5 minutes. Try it.

I have laundry baskets for each set of laundry I do, lights, darks, and delicates. Every morning before you leave for work do quick pick up when you make your bed. If you do it every day it will only take you 5 minutes tops.

I also like closet organization systems. There are some beautifu ones out now that are like furniture. If you have a small closet (not a walk-in, just folding doors) you can turn your closet wall into one large wardrob. I would start by taking off your closet doors and any interior fixtures, as well as remove any trim around the closet. Then go to your local home improvement store or Ikea.com and select mix and match cabinetry that will fit your entire wall. With the closet doors off, you could even get creative and build in a little sofa bench, or shoe changing seat in the nook.

If you aren't comfortable doing that yourself, many cities have stores like California Closets or something similar. You can have a professional come out to your home and do the measurements and installations for you.

Then it is just a matter of keeping up on it.

Okay whenever you take something out and are finished using it put it right back in it's place. That helps clutter from building up. When you take off your clothing put it right away in your laundry basket. Same with shoes and socks etc. In your closet separate everything into sections, pants, skirts, shirts, dresses, etc. When winter time comes around take all of your summer clothing and put it in plastic containers into your storage or garage room. Same in the summer take your winter clothes out into the plastic containers and put the summer ones out into your closet. This also helps clutter. Shoes buy shoe rackets to organize your room. If you can't afford the shoe rackets then keep them in the boxes that they came in and neatly stack them in a corner of your closet. To organize your undies, bras, and socks. Use old shoe boxes that fit into your drawer. Fold your bras into one box, undies into another, and socks into another. Put the boxes already organized into your drawer. This will maintain your drawer organized. Every day clean up for about 5-10 minutes and that should keep everything up. Then on the weekend do a massive clean up. Dust, organize, change sheets etc. If you do this every weekend that should only take up 1-2 hours of your time depending on how you keep up during the week and how big your room is. GOOD LUCK!

Hang up clothes according to item. All of one thing next to each other. Pack away out of season clothes in a plastic box under the bed. Put shoes you don't use regularly in a box and put under the bed. Get all things that don't belong in the bedroom out and where they belong. Clean out the jewelery box and toss what you don't need. If you haven't worn something in 2 years, you won't wear it, throw out. Toss any old papers and magazines. you won't read them. Make it your relaxing space. Keep it quiet.

Get a closet organizer from home depot or lowes to give you more closet and shelf room.

Get a shelf that has removeable bins that you can stash items that may otherwise make your room look cluttered.

Really evaluate all of your things and see what you have that you haven't used in more than 6 months. If you haven't used it, time to get rid of it.

Each morning, straighten your bedding.

Each evening, put your shoes and clothes away from the day.

This should keep your room looking great!
Good luck!

Never leave clothing, etc. lie on the bed or the floor. Once it's off your body, hang it up or put it in the laundry. Every Saturday do one main project. Sweep, dust furniture, or get a box and put things in it that you haven't worn or used in the past 6 months. Give it away or throw it out.
