What is the best way to use your computer? do you leave it on all day; do you log off everytime you use it; do you log on everytime you want to use it? Is it dangerous to leave it on all day? can someone invade it?
Thank you in advance for your help.

It depends on the person. I usually just leave it on all day, but then again I have another computer I keep off all day. There is no right and wrong when it comes to whether or not to leave the computer on all day. Its usually preference. My laptop is on 24/7 because I'm on the laptop all the time and I would want constant access to it. My desktop is never on because I only use it for file storage.

If you keep your computer on, use your power savings and let it go standby so that your battery doesnt overheat. Its completely okay to leave it on all day if you dont want to turn it off. There are no case studies where they compare a computer thats been on all day and a computer thats normally off. Computer parts will still go bad whether you use them all the time or not.

As you can see from the answers opinion is divided on this. Personally I recommend people leave it running during the day and shut it off at night or when you are away for an extended period. A computer is connected to your household current and does generate a lot of heat. If something like a fan or the power supply goes this can be trouble.

Turning your computer on and off all the time can actually be bad for it. You shouldn't be worried about overheating....if it's going to happen, then you have a problem anyway. Logging off depends on access that others may have to your computer and how you feel about that. Unless you have a BIOS password, it is pretty easy to get around the logoff/logon passwords and get into the computer. I am not sure that you are anyway protected from outside attacks while logged off if you are using a broadband connection. Hope this helps

If I'm downloading something that's gonna take a while, I leave my computer on, but set it to where it shuts off when everything is done downloading. When there's no reason to have the computer on, yes I turn it off. It's not dangerous to leave it on all day, but I treat my computer as if it needs a break hehe. It's more risky to get viruses, trojans, hackers, etc. if you use the administrator account, not by just leaving it on.

well there are arguments supporting both ways about leaving your computer on or off...so in that regard it really doesnt matter just personal preference. As far as loggin on and off. I would just say logg off and never leave it signed on especially under admin while you are away for long periods of time. Beeing admin is allowing viruses and what not available to more areas on you computer. hope this helps u a lil

I say turn it off when not in use, you are less likely to burn out the fan and also less likely to waste time on it. It isn't dangerous to leave it on all day, but leaving it connected to the internet all day when you are not using it is dangerous. That is when it could possibly be hacked. Make sure you have a good firewall and virus protection.
I prefer Zone Alarm for my firewall, Ad-Aware for my adware removal and Norton Antivirus.

I shut my coputer down and turn it on as need basis for multiple reasons:
1. I have Windows XP - which boots up very fast < 1 minute. (I guess I am patient enough to wait 1 minute)
2. Saves me some money ($229/year - *Source 1*) on my electric bill.
3. Safer - since it's not turned on all the time for hackers to toil with it. If your computer is on and you have broadband/"always on" internet connection. You have high chance of getting hacked (this of course depends on how secure your computer is?).

Hope this helps!

When you start your computer (if using XP) close the processes that you do not use (dont fret if you dont know what I am talking about.

Then I beleive it is best to put your computer into a mode called Hybernation. This turns off the computer but when you turn it on, your desktop will load back it to the way it was when you left.

Here, I help repair computers, so here is what happens:
The "best" way to use your computer is to use it when you really need to. It really actually depends on ur computer, if your computer is new and high-tech, leaving it will NOT damage it, BUT i would not recommand it. If your computer is old, (approx. from 2002 or b4), do not leave it open all day. It will be catching dust and there will be clogs often, amongst other problems.
1) if you use computer occaisonally, 3-4x per day, put it on stand by or screensaver.
2) if you use it often, 5-8x per day, just leave it on.
3) if you use it less than 3 x per day, I would recommand to AT LEAST hibernate it,shut down if possible.
4) If your computer is slow:
1-3x shut down, definitly
3-6x stand by shut down if possible
6/+x leave it open, but stand by or hibernate whenever possible.
PS: If the computer is new, please leave it open 24hrs for the first 2 days, just to make sure the computer can stand it, if not, return it. But listen to the advice after the 2 days,

Its like 400 watts I think. Maybe saves you 8cents a minute if its off in electricity. Saves you 3 minutes in not having to boot it up. Someone could theoretically "invade it". What is on there that would cause you to even care about that. MIT leaves all of theirs on.
