You have a right to receive at least one free credit report a year from each credit rating agency (Experian, Equifax and Transunion). In some states you are entitled to see them more often, and "yes", if you are refused a credit, you are entitled to see the report immediately (it does not count towards "once-a-year" free credit)

Details and links to all three agencies can be found here: https://www.annualcreditreport.com/cra/index. I liked starting my request from this site, because if you go to a credit agency site directly, sometimes it's not easy to find a right link.

Instead of watching (ordering) all three reports at once, you can watch one report every 4 months (and if you're married, it'll double!)

Some sites (Equifax?) will still try to slip in something extra for an extra fee (your credit score or "Identity theft" protection) for an extra fee, but you don't have to order anything.

Sometimes from your Bank.
