Sea lions mate on land. During the breeding season, the large males establish territories that are occupied by harems of females (may be 3 to dozens of females, depending on the status of the male).
The females give birth to their pups that were conceived the year before, and a few days later they're ready to mate. Males have a penis, and they mount the females with what appears to us as rather aggressive behavior. Here's a photograph (of an elephant seal, but the difference in sizes is similar) :

Pretty much in the same way as us unfortunetely.......a great big slobbering male jumps on top of the female, ...there's a lot of noise and mess for about 2 mins and then he moves on to the next.
