I need to give my number to someone in japan. what do i need to tell them?

try dialing

81 110 area code + number

That just the reverse of what I do when I call people in Japan. It should work.

Typically you dial the US this way:

001 + 10 digit US number;

example: to dial 123-456-7890 you'll dial:

001 123 456 7890

Just give them the country code, which is 1 for the US, then your area code and your phone number.

Tell them +1 area code number.

That plus sign is the international shorthand for "international access code", since it varies from country to country. (In the US and the NANPA area, it's 011; in Europe and a lot of the world, it's 00, and other countries have goofy systems.)

Or tell them to get Skype and call you gratis. (S/he's able to get the bandwidth for this.)
