I don't think Rooney will experience the same reaction of the fans and media - possibly Ronaldo will but I see they have already tried to take the heat out if it by both saying they remain friends.
When Beckham was sent off it was seen as a stupid, unnecessary premeditated action and was more crucial on the outcome of the game. There seems to be a certain amount of sympathy with Rooney - this time.
(I take it you refer to Beckham's red card against Argentina)

I think that everyone thought that Beckham should have been tougher and kept playing since (1) he's the captain (2) it's the World Cup and (3) England needed his talent in the free kicks. Not sure what happens to Rooney except that he will have that red card on his world cup record.

Beckham got sent off because of injury and is now stepping down as Captain for England. Also, Rooney was an idot and stepped on a players genitals from Portugal and was given a red card deservingly...by the way...you do know England is out don't you? It's now France, Germany, Italy, and Portugal.

well obviously everyone realised that beckham is the best set piece taker in the world and he went off for the rest of the game....so that he couldn't even take pk's. rooney will continue to get better and better eventually becoming more of an international super star than he already is and he will probably beat up c.ronaldo with help from the rest of the english football watching population which consists of....all of the people in england. :) it's a theory...:P

Beckham was abused after his sending off because he was seen as a pretensious git at the time. Rooney is more of an ordinary guy so will not recieve the same abuse. Both have equally let their country down however.
