From what I can remember of the sixties and the filmore west, psychedelic rock consisted of music that you could take while you dropped lsd that would enhance the mind expanding experience. Some of the bands I remember performing what is now called psychedelic rock were jefferson airplane (before they became starship) the grateful dead, jimi hendrix, buffalo springfield band, paul butterfeild, some of frank zappa and the mothers of invention's early stuff, the doors, jethro tull and bands like that. Probably the ultimate psychedelic rock song of all time would be White Rabbit by Grace Slick and Jefferson Airplane. It speaks directly to the experience of taking lsd. Hope that's what you were looking for.

Psychedelic songs are like Hendrix's Purple Haze, Iron Butterfly's In-a-gadda-da-vida, and Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit.
Psychedelic rock is music that replicates mind-altering experiences (i.e. LSD, mescaline, pot, psilocybin). Psychedelic is sometimes called "acid folk" or "acid rock".
Pretty much any rock band in the 60's:
Grateful Dead
Jefferson Airplane
Jimi Hendrix
Iron Butterfly
Pink Floyd
Beatles Revolver album
Holy Modal Rounders

Check out techweb.com.Theres a whole station full of them. The term I think originates from the Haight Ashbury scene of the late sixties and lasted into the seventies. Its basically music that allows the listener to transcend on another plain.Usually fueled by some sort of stimulant. Its more than just spacey sounding music.Tool would be a modern example of this type of rock.

There's also psychedlic soul with late 60's/early 70's works from the Temptations, some Sly and The Family Stone album cuts, and the tripped-out funk of rock and roll hall-of-famers Parliament/Funkadelic

I say Pink Floyd .
When you listen to it , it invigorates the soul and brings out the weirdo in everyone + it relaxes you.
The lyrics are strange and in some way they make you feel like you are on some 'natural high'. I could get shot while listening to Pink Floyd and I'll still be happy as ever.

Jefferson Airplane and Grateful Dead cover that territory.

The song tries to recreate an LSD experience, through sonic tones and (if you were at the Fillmore) visual light show.
