I think you're thinking of the pagan three-fold rule, believed by Wiccans and some other earth-based religious groups. It basically says that whatever you send out is returned to you three-fold - if you do only good for people, incredible things will happen to you. If you do bad to other people, even worse things will happen to you.

3 is the most complete number in the universe...
The ancient greeks considered the triangle a perfect shape which has 3 sides and 3 angles
The christians love it b/c of the holy trinity, and 3 days after Jesus died, he rose again...
The list goes on and on... almost every culture and religion has placed an importance on the number three...
for different reasons...
That is why bad things happen in threes is a common saying

Things happen in three's excet when the happen in 4's? The old folks wouldn't accept tat they's stop counting at 3 and restart at one expecting 2 more.

Everything happens three times in succession. Such as you know someone who dies and then two more people you know die shortly thereafter. It is myth.
