I agree... but most kits contain a pig-tail that you simply plug into the existing wiring. Look under the vehicle (at the back) for a connector, take it apart and put the pig-tail (a T connector) in the line, plug it all back up and VIOLA!!

Most newer cars have a plug in the wiring harness near the tail lights and you may need a kit to adapt it to your trailer plug. Check your owners manual or do a search of forums for your specific car make. If you car is older you will need to splice into the wiring for your tail lights. Its not hard but if you are not experienced with automotive electrical systems you could short it out and cost more than taking it to mechanic.

Easiest way is to use a test light. One wire needs to be left turn signal one needs to be tight turn signal one is your tail lights and the final one is your ground.
