I just started using the ipod so someone else may be able to help you better but after you start your itunes then plug the ipod into your computer by usb it usually promts me to replace what I have on my ipod with whatever is in my library. So if you select yes it should add those items to your ipod. But I have yet to do this but it just sounds logical.

plug your ipod into the computer and it should automatically pop up and start updating; if not, then you're either one manual update (change it to automatic) or you need to reset your ipod (toggle the hold button and press the center button and the menu button at the same time)

If that doesn't help go to http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/
