just frustrated that our fuel prices are so high and I am wondering what purpose NASA has for attempting to send the shuttle up and every day it is delayed it costs 1 million per day

Better the delays than destroy another shuttle or end the lives of another crew. It was taking short cuts that contributed to the last two accidents. The current problem, the 8 inch deep crack in the foam on the main tank, could result in another catastrophic failure.

As for the one who mentioned going to the moon. The technology and data is being gleaned off of this program to help make it happen. The technology for the next moon landings will be more tried and true, where the original landings were more "flying by the seat of their pants".

Going into space will be always risky; a bit of caution on NASA's part is warranted.

On something the scale of a shuttle launch, a million is chump change.

Shuttle launches, ineed, all NASA missions, stand to benefit not only America, but all nations. Don't believe it...? How d'ya think they got all those nifty GPS sattlelites up there, kites?

My point is that this isn't a Socialist country; a lot of money here is earmarked for for R & D, and not individual equal checks for every citizen (who makes under 60K a year) to blow on the ponies.

We were the first (and so far only) country to put men on the moon; I take enormous pride in that stunning accomplishment. At the time (1969), lots of folks were whining about how poor women with children of multiple (absent) fathers needed bus tokens. I'm glad we went to the moon, and let those ladies catch rides with neighbors, frankly.

*big sigh* Yeah, our gas prices are through the roof. It's a damn shame. But...IT'S STILL CHEAPER HERE THAN IN JAPAN!!

I'm reading two different questions, here. Are you concerned about the shuttle going up? Or are you concerned about the shuttle being delayed?

You are right, what are we doing up there anyway except get some good photo-ops. Lets take care of people on earth with the millions. People are starving. People are sleeping on the street in the shadow of the White House. Where is the glory in that?

if we have so much trouble getting a shuttle into space now, explain how we got a craft on the moon 30 years ago.

the funny thing with NASA is that all the things they do come from the lowest bidder, but yet it still costs so much.

That's government for ya.

They want to be the first to find out the technology the aliens are using.

Let's start with the obvious and work our way down. They're not personally paying for it. Are they?
