They are the same city.. gotham is at night, and metropolis is during the day hahahaha jk.
I think they both were originally made to parallel NY. But, DC doesnt exist in the same world as us, so its possible to have to NY clone-cities. Also Gotham is more stylized like Dick Tracy, even to this day, so they could both be trying to be NY, but of different eras.

When Superman and Batman were created in the late 1930's it was not common for superheros to interact with one another. The first group of superheros was the Justice Society. Black Cat was inspired to become a superhero after seeing the green lantern but they never interacted. The first time Batman and Superman interacted with one another was on the Superman radio show which aired in the early 1940's. Both Metropolis and Gotham was modeled after New York City since all the creators lived in the city. They gave the cities different names creating supercities both located somewhere on the east coast. The first book that made much about an actual city was the Fantastic Four (New York), however Captain Marvel would have adventures set in cities throughout the country. These stories appeared throughout the 40's and early 50's until legal issues with DC comics caused Fawcett to cease publication of Captain Marvel related comics.

Metropolis has pretty much always been ny.
but I think Gotham has only recently (17 years ago when Tim Brutan did Batman) been thought of as Chicago.Because Chicago and Gotham both have a problem w/ gangs

Gotham and Metropolis are both in the DC Comics universe. Metropolis is where Superman/Clark Kent works, Gotham is where Batman/Bruce Wayne operates. Gotham is the DC equivalent of NYC and Metropolis is near Smallville, KS, so it would make sense that it was the DC equivalent of the Midwest's biggest city.

Both Gotham and Metropolis were inspired by New York. However, as Metropolis is in Kansas(within a hour's drive of Smallville), often theorized to be Kansas City, and Gotham has literally been stated to -be- New York City(Marvel/DC Crossover), both cities are distinct. The "this is my city" theme has been extolled by Batman to Superman many a time.

It depends. According to comic books writers, they say that Metropolis is New York by day & Gotham City is New York by night. You & your boss better look up the facts to find out.

Once a few years back, I read an article that drew comparisons between DC Universe cities and cities in our world. It broke down a bit like this.....
Metropolis-Ney York City
Gotham City-Manhattan
Central City/Flash-Kansas City, MO.
Midway City/HawkMan & HawkGirl-Chicago, IL.
Coastal City/Green Lantern-Los Angeles, CA.
Star City/Green Arrow & Black Canary-Seattle, WA.
Ivy Town/Atom-Boston, MA.

Enjoy!

actually i think the writers did make Metropolis and Gotham in the same world and time. you know how in the show......(not to sure about the comics) but batman and superman did hook up and do stuff (no sexual terms intended) i don't know i'm kind of confused, i'll just ask my freind and see what she says cause she's an expert when it comes to things like this, thanks to her brother.
