Because the English authorities demand that a players second name appears on their shirts, Unless they are Brazilian whos name are Very Long, Hence Gilberto at Arsenal, and Juninho when at Boro.
FIFA and UEFA are more lax when it comes to the name you wear. And even go as far as allowing players' nicknames to appear on their backs.
E.G. Kaka, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho (Little Ronaldo) Etc Etc Etc
