Apart from the 4' monster predators that requires hundreds, if not thousands of gallons each, the khuli loach. This is the only SMALL fresh water fish that is appropriate. If you are filthy rich, get a 1000+ tank, and look for ropefish.
A khuli looks like this http://www.aquahobby.com/gallery/e_kuhli.php
is great for turning over substrate, and eating uneten food, is a peaceful addition, grows to 3-4" and fits in most community set ups. Just make sure they have plenty of hiding places, otherwise they may get into filter tubes, and if you dont see them often, dont worry as they are slightly nocternal, bury into the substrate (preferably sand or peat) and are quite shy. There are a variety of other loaches as well, just reshearch them as some like the clown get huge
There are also freshwater eels

i have a number of fish tanks and in my smallest one, a ten gallon, i have a freshwater snowflake moray eel. they start out at about 10 inches long. there are two different breeds of the snowflake, freshwater and saltwater. the saltwater snowflake is black and white but the freshwater is just your average brown. the freshwater snowflake can deal with a ten gallon for only so long because they can grow to three feet and will need a much bigger tank. if you're looking to buy an eel, your local petstore with a fishroom should have a couple of snowflakes, they're the most common. it should cost you anywhere between 15 and 20 dollars depending on the size. i LOVE my eel, he isn't dangerous to people or my other fish, they're a lot more laid back than people would think.

The Arrowana kind of looks like an eel but is a top swimmer and gets about 4 feet. As some have said, khuli loaches, yoyo loaches as well resemble eels. There is also the fire eel, tiretrack eel and a few other types. Search for Mastacembelus armatus and you'll find the tiretrack eel. There are a few other species in this family. Read up on their care and water parameters before you run out and buy one, and they can also get rather large.

There's several possibilities. The most likely would be one of several Loach species. The most eel-like is the Weather Loach also known as the Dojo Loach. Other possibilities are Kuhli and Yoyo Loaches. There is something called the Peacock Eel which is not really an eel which I believe is also in the loach family. Then there is a brackish fish called Dragonfish that you will see in many freshwater aquarium stores.

You may have saw a kuli loach, dojo loach, tire track eel, pecock eel, fire eel, many different types of eel's. Unfortunately they are actually fish, that look like an eel. It could have been a ropefish, some sort of bicher, or a freshwater moray eel, which is an eel, but not a moray....they are swamp eel's. Commonly sold as a freshwater "Moray." The fire eel's and tire track's are very good eaters, and hardy in the right environments. And grow very large. I'd suggest one of those

The kuhli loach has a slight resemblance. They get no larger than five inches and are long and slim, hanging out mainly at the tank bottom or draped on a plant. They are gregarious, and will be less shy if you have seven to ten in a ten gallon tank. Check out this link (Google search results) for pics... so cute!

By the way... there is no such thing as a freshwater snowflake eel- they may live for a while in freshwater, but they are brackish/saltwater fish. Do not keep them in a freshwater tank!

you can get a fresh water spiny eel, sometimes they are called dojo fish, you'll more than likely find them in tanks with goldfish at the pet store.
