So when I go to certain web pages where there is sound playing I hear nothing. I went to preferences and advanced and the box that says "play sound in internet explorer" is checked off. What could it be?

Honestly, I dont use IE anymore.

IE is too buggy and too much of a hasle for common day users of the internet.....popups, easy backdoor trojans being transfered....

Try and get Firefox.

Google it.
