Supposedly, Sawney Beane and his family was horriby inbred to the degree of becoming monstrous. Numerous people were killed and eaten, with spoiled remains scattered about to frighten away locals. After the cave they lived in was discovered (entrance was hidden below water at high tide), the discoverers said that it was like "The Gates of Hell itself". The Beane clan was hunted down by dogs, and put to death by the Scottish government.

The movie is based on the legend of Sawney Beane and his family (a wife, eight sons and six daughters), a feral clan who inhabited and roamed the highlands of Scotland's East Lothian County, near Edinburgh, in the early 1400s. They captured, tormented and ate several transients. They were eventually captured on the order of Scotland's King James, were judged to be insane, and executed without trial.

It might be a true story, but likely it is English propaganda.

the movie was based on a family that lived in england hundreds of years ago. They would kidnap travelers and then kill and eat them. They lived in caves along the ocean. The movie is a modern day tale based on some fact with a lot of farce thrown in.

This movie was horrible, there couldnt be people out there living like they were. Its funny my boyfriend and I were driving this weekend and turned down a road that looked like the one in the movie. He said "Oh we're just gonna go to a gas station real quick" I started to laugh. Its creepy to think about but I dont think so. . .

the only true thing in that movie, was the nuclear testing. For one thing, where were they getting water? or food ? (between travelers I mean) Apply a little common sense to the circumstances!
