I have never heard of such, but I have a friend that had a real estate agent try to charge a retainer fee because gas is expensive. WTH!

It sounds a bit out of the ordinary, but if you agree to pay it, then it's legal. They can always ask, but you can also say, "NO!"

I'd tell the agent to dump the Tahoe for a more economical vehicle.

Retainer fees are perfectly legal, but all of the agents I know would never think of charging a retainer fee.

Basically the agent wants to be sure you buy a home, it protects them incase you use another agent or do not buy a home, or thier brokerage makes them charge this which goes directly into the owners pocket, either way try to avoid the $200 to $500 that some try to charge.

I personally think you should consider looking for another agent who cares for your needs more than thiers.
