Mainly part of her character. This was mentioned in an E! Special about Lucille's keen ability to make Lucy seem annoying.
Lucille, in reality, had a decent singing voice.

She was supposed to be a complete knucklehead on the show, that's what made it so funny! *she was priceless* No, she could really sing...not as well as Desi, but she could carry a tune, yes. It was her comedic genius that makes her withstand the test of time.

I am sure she was just putting on with singing off key, heard her in The Long Trailer and she was good.

I heard her sing in one of her older movies from the 40's . she wasnt bad but wasnt great either.

She was not as bad as she acted on the show. That was mostly for the comedic effect.

no it was just the character b/c in The Wizard of Oz she sang over tha rainbow & it didnt sound bad.
