After having two girls my husband wants to go to a specialist and have his sperm separated in order to have a boy. Would you consider this as "playing God" or just taking advantage of God giving technology?

Yes, I have heard that this works. You can spin the sperm in a centrifuge and the female ones (containing the X chromosome) sink to the bottom because the Y chromosome is much smaller, and therefore lighter, than the X ones. I can imagine this wouldn't be that good for the sperm but then again, it's not like you have a limited amount to work with or anything.

Then again, this seems like a bad road to go down not because of any ethical or religious reason but a populational one. I think a lot of couples prefer boys to carry on the family name and so on. With this technology freely available, you would have one big sausage party in the US in a hundred years. Just look at China with it's "one child policy", and they don't even have this.

One reason this would be useful is in the case of some kind of sex-linked (X chromosome) disease found in the father, like red/green color blindness (bad example because it's not serious). You can just select Y-containing sperm and forget about any of your kids carrying the trait.

I don't think it's playing God. Still I don't think it's right.

Lately there have been some discussions with the latest developments in embryo screening for genetic diseases.
Up to now parents who both had a marker for a genetic disease would have (with a certain probability) children suffering from this disease. Now it is becoming possible to screen cells and allow selection of the embryo which will not develop the disease.
I think that's right because although we are messing with who gets to be born, we do it only to ensure the health of the person that will come to life and aim to a better and happier life for him/her.

Selecting gender or any other trait just based on the aesthetics of parents reduces the idea of a child, a human being, down to a mere consumable. Aims in pleasing egoistic superficial desires of the parents rather than a better life for the new-comer in this world. Society has been degenerating and transforming everything to consumables (look at trafficking). Don't promote it further; treat your children with the respect and love they deserve.

I think a better question would why does he want a son?

He may have some very unrealistic expectations that your son might not be able to live up to. Will your husband love a son who grows up to be a gay florist or is he only going to love an ultra-macho he-man?

I would also question how you would explain to your daughters why you didn't want a third daughter. I think it would make your girls feel inferior and as if they weren't as good as a boy.

Wanting a 3rd child is wonderful, wanting it only if it's a boy is troubling.

I think it would be cool! If I had the opportunity to do so then I would take advantage of it, but then it kind of takes the surprise out of having a baby! My husband and I are trying to conceive and we want a girl, but I kind of don't want to know what it's going to be until it's born!!!

If I could afford to do it I would do it, we have so many choices in other areas. Like choosing our mate for genetic qualities even if subconciously or maybe our bodies do it for us as chemical reaction. One thing to remember though, is that it has been known that sometimes foetus can change sex after implantation so if God wants something He'll sure get His way ;)

i'm a person who believes in both religion and science, although i am a person more well versed in the latter. if you want my opinion, i dont think its playing god if you would like to better your chances of having a son. in reality though, if the two of you would wish to do that because you wanted a son, it's really up to the both of you. don't listen to other people and what they say because their beliefs are different than yours. the two of you should search your feelings and beliefs and do what you think is right. good luck to you!

In MY personnal humble opinion, God set it ALL up on natural random selection. Leave science out of this argument. Otherrwise, TOO< when the kid messes up later in life, you might start saying, "I DIDN'T WANT YOUUUUU! YOU'RE HIIIIIS/HEEEEEER SELECTION!" And can you picture the argument going, "HONEY? THAAAAAAAT's YOUR selection DOING THHHAAAAAAAAT!! YOU do the punishment! IIIIIIII HAD NOTHING to DO WITH IT!!"
