Unfortunately most forms of birth control cause weight gain - the pill, the shot, the patch... I have tried ALL forms (except IUD) and it is just a matter of adjusting your lifestyle. You need to be more active - try walking or doing some form of cardio exercise for at least 45 minutes a day. And your best bet is to eliminate all fast food from your diet. I did this and I lost all my excess weight in a few months.
If you are already a healthy eater and exerciser, and the weight gain continues to spiral out of control, I would definitely see your doctor and perhaps get an IUD - the only kind that doesn't make you gain weight. Just talk to your doctor - they are the best source of info and can help you out!
GOOD LUCK!

Side effects from hormonal birth control are in the masses, a lot are not mentioned to women and girls before they are put onto birth control. Things like nesting and low libido are rarely discussed, hell most people don't even realise that the idea of hormonal birth control regulating menstrual cycles is a myth - it works by suppressing cycles, and as such it will effect most body cycles.
I personally was lucky, difference is from most lucky women I learned a hell of a lot about hormonal birth control the older I got and so I recognised things the birth control was doing to me where most women would not realise the link.
For me the main problems were menstrual cramping (no matter what I did to prevent them – I thought I was doing something wrong, but in fact the pill was cancelling out everything I was using as prevention), irritable bowel syndrome, low/absent libido and seriously harmful nesting.
I coped with it, simply, by coming off the pill and switching to FAM and later on a IUD.

Okay yes it is a side effect but it doesn't have to be. If the pill you are on you notice you are gaining weight from it. Go back to the doctor and try another one. That is what I did. There are so many kind of pills. You will be able to find one that does what it needs to without making you gain weight.

Hi ,
The combo pill gave me high blood pressure.
So I went on to the mini pill and I find it's better it doesn't have oestrogen, which when you have too much can be linked with some cancers. I also heard if you have too much estrogen it can cause excess vagania wetness!
There is a new mini pill called cerazette from france and has 12hrs protection if you forget to take it that day.
I am 7-12lbs over weight, so I joined weight watchers, I find it great.
I have realy found little to no side affects with the mini pill.
Hope this helps.

There are other types of birth control pills that may not cause similar side effects. Talk with your doctor for the best advice.

Weight gain is a common side effect. For me, it made me gain weight, but only a little bit. So I counter-acted that by working out a couple times a week. I think when I first started taking it, years ago, it made me moody. Other than that, it was ok....

The side-effects depend on the pill you are using. But the most common ones are: hypertension (especially if you smoke and you're over 35), candidiasis, thrombosis, it cand affect your libido and you'll be more moody. These are the main ones for all pills. The good part is if you have problems with your period, they'll be gone!

weight gain, bloating, try a different type of pill, it may be that the hormone level in your pill is too high.. talk to your doctor, they might be able to suggest something that wont effect you as much

Best thing I can suggest is if you are dealing with things you don't usually do contact your doctor. Side-effect will vary with all women.
