You can learn alot both ways, you could learn more from your parents if you would only listen, however, most of us have to learn the hard way, we think our parents havent been there.

Definitely school of hard knocks. My parents overprotected me from everything in the world so I was totally naive by the time I got into the 'real world.' Boy, did I have a lot to learn when I got married the first time (that was the first time I had left my parents house).

my parents instilled in me some good habits I guess, but def. the hard knocks was way better in teaching me what i know today.Having to learn from my mistakes and losing a lot of $$ in the process.
