Straight marriage is not sacred because we humans are not holy. From the first time two people got together in any kind of ceremony, the reasons for it were legion & only rarely love was involved. Marriages were all for convenience, business arrangements if you will. Does that sound sacred to you?
Today when (at least in American society) we're pretty free to choose our partners, society still frowns if you marry outside your religion, your race, your class, even your city or neighborhood. Where's the holiness there? Celebrities marry & divorce to help their careers or capture the front page, and let's not forget politicians. Sacred unions you say? Ha! Children are abused, tortured & killed, the lucky ones are abandoned. Cheating is so widespread we're not even scandalized by it anymore. Typical husbands abandon families for younger wives every day. So, "What God brought together," etc, etc, eh?
If it were up to the church (particularly the Catholic one), we'd still be burning up witches, those practicing any other faith, & of course homosexuals. BTW, I happen to be a Catholic straight woman, & I *know* what I'm talking about. It's taken centuries of struggle to reach the reluctanct tolerance we have these days toward other religions. Prejudice against homosexuals is officially not encouraged, but it shows its insidious touches in things like the desperate need to forbid gay marriage.
The whole world should be encouraged that there's still people around, of ANY persuasion or faith, that want to be together even when it's not easy or applauded. Look around your own friends and family. How many loving couples do you know? How many had to face ridicule just to tell the world they were one?
If anything, gay unions, against all odds, make the "institution" of marriage holier by bringing into it actual feelings instead of convenience & the need to make front page news or gain social status. Even those that only want a legal way to share their property & children have a more noble purpose in their union than the great majority of newlyweds out there.

I do not have a problem with same sex unions. I think that there should be something for two people to have the rights associated with marriage (insurance and child custody). Call it something other than marriage if the closed minded people have a problem with that term.

It's nobody's business to "agree" anymore than we can agree about "straight" marriages. You don't have to live with them while they live out their married life, so why do you care? We should be more focused on celebrities who get married and divorced in a span of 24 hours, or 16 year olds who run away and elope, then concern ourselves about two gay people who only want a legal way to share their lives together. Stop being so hung up on your ego-centrical ideals about what is "right"

I don't necessarily agree with the marriage part of it, but I believe that same-sex partners should have rights the same as I do with my spouse. Like....insurance benefits, rights in case of an emergency or accident, property rights, etc.... I just feel like whomever you pick as a mate, should have to same rights, whether male or female.

I think all the people who claim to be "religious" who fight gay marriage are to self righteous. I am a straight female married to a man but I have no problem with other people marrying whomever they chose, Its not my life, its not my decision, and I do not have to face the consequences of them. God said you shouldnt judge so why people are is beyond me. I think more people need to read the bible for what it is and stop trying to impose things on other people. Who cares if you think someone is going to hell? It doesnt affect you! So Yeah I guess I agree with marriage of any sort, as long as its by two consenting adults who arent hurting anyone else. Your consequences are yours.
Marriage to me is the union of two people who love each other and are willing to devote themselves to that. Everyone has their own idea on what marriage is and your entitled to yours!

Marriage was is a sacred institution that as meant between male and female. If two guys or two girls wanna be together, they can do whatever, but don't offend me by calling it marriage. Call it whatever you want, and I don't care if they get the same rights as married people as long as they leave marriage alone. What part of "SACRED" don't they understand?

Of course! Two people that love each other should have the right to marry like everybody else if they want to. Who are we to judge? This country is based on equal rights for everyone not just for some of the population!

I believe that everyone should have the right to marry whoever they choose, regardless of their sex. Everyone in this entire country should have the same rights. It's not fair. For the record, I am a female married to a male, so my opinion is unbiased. I just feel everyone should be equal regardless of age, sex, race, sexual orientation, etc.

Same gender marriages (or legal committments) should be allowed...absolutely. This would allow people who love each other to care for each other legally. Many are doing it already, if it was legal they could share benefits and taxes etc. I think they should be allowed.

With freedom of choice, one can not object to two individual persos deciding together to live as a maried pair, till it does not directly affect other persons.
Social taboo are the matter of choice and not logical, as they effect individual freedom of action, not adverly affectig others.
