Earwigs do NOT crawl inside people's ears - that is an old superstition. They were pulverized and the powder was used to treat ear diseases long ago though, so they were technically in people's ears if you want to look at it that way. They are a real nuisance if they do get indoors and breed, but usually they like dark places in the garden.
Don't believe everything you hear.

For those of you who are saying that earwigs NEVER crawl in anyone's ear...be careful about using that word.
I don't think it's very common, but they have crawled into people's ears (but did not bore into their brains nor did they lay eggs).
I ought to know because at 0430 this morning, my mother (age 69) was pounding on my door saying there was something in her ear. I (age 45) flushed out her ear with water and, lo and behold, an earwig came out.
This morning she is having problems hearing, but I suspect it is because of leftover water in her ear canal.
Don't say "never" or "always". As my old Semantics teacher, Mrs. Kraft, said...it displays your ignorance of probability.

"Earwigs are so named because they crawl into people's ears while they're sleeping and bore into their brains."
False. While there's some dispute over the origin of the name "earwig," there's no dispute whatsoever among entomologists as to the insect's fabled fondness for the human ear — it's balderdash. (Earwigs aren't particularly keen on devouring your brain, either.)

Never had any earwigs in my ear but they do get in garden cabbages and Brussels sprouts! I had to learn it the hard way! My mother made me eat my Brussels sprouts and later found half a bug on my plate! We never knew what happened to the other half! (I wore really thick glasses back then!) To this day I can not eat brussels sprouts without first cutting them in half! My mother felt so bad she never made me eat them again!
This may not answer you question but at least it will make you laugh!

No, they don't crawl into your ear. It's just a myth. They feed on ants or other tiny bugs.
