I was driving on the freeway going about 65mph when suddenly my car, I guess, lost power and dropped down to like 30mph..I couldn't go any faster than that even though I tried. I was able to get off the freeway and get it home driving at about 25mph. The next day I tried to drive it to friends house (who is a mechanic) and it overheated..It turned out there is a hole in the hose and antifreeze was leaking (quite a bit). Anyway, my question is, is the drop in speed associated with the radiator problem? or should I be looking for other possible problems?

It's possible that the transmission is failing. That would explain why it dropped into limp mode (otherwise known as fail-safe). If the transmission is not working properly, the engine is working double-time to keep the vehicle moving. It's also possible that the transmission cooler portion of your radiator has burst and is pouring antifreeze into the transmission. If that is the case, it won't be moving much longer. You could have more than one problem. Take it to a professional, not a shade tree.

You didn't mention anything about your coolant light coming on your dash board, so it is quite possible it could be something other than your overheating problems, unless your Temperature Sending Unit is malfunctioning. Some vehicles have built in protection in their computers if things don't read accurate on the engine.

Working in a company with heating/cooling, everything is very high tech, where there may not be a decent answer to this question unless you have an actual service manual from the dealership. Usually they are $100 or more. You might be able to snatch one up on ebay for $40 to $70.

If you overheated the engine, the head gasket is "toast". The head will usually warp and require machining, and the head gasket will odviously need to be repaced. A leak down test and compression test will help you find out. Good luck! Hope the car is worth all this. Might be cheaper to look for a used engine.

You did not state what kind of car you have but on many cars, there is a "limp home" feature that reduces the power when there is a major event...like lost of coolant.
