It is possible for a cracker (I am going to use cracker because it is a better word for someone who is trying to get into your system) to get into your computer through any number of ways. Just by sending an instant message to the cracker could give him/her enough information to get in.
The cracker would use something called an "ip grabber" to identify your IP address once you send an instant message. It is more common for them to try and get your IP by you sharing a file with them or something that exposes your self to them. Avoid sharing files with people that you don't know.
The cracker from there would use a port scanner to identify the ports on your machine that are open to attack. From there he could install a sniffer or keylogger that logs all of your personal information. Trojans would probably be installed on your machine as well for easy access later on. This is precisely how a cracker/hacker could get into your system. The best way to protect yourself is to use a firewall keep anti-virus software

In short, yes they could use Messenger to gain information which may then aid them in hacking your computer. Why they'd really bother though is another question.

Well through... yahoo messenger... yes it is possible.. even without physical access to your pc.. if he knows your IP address.. and he can colllect some private informations... of yours like key recording.. screen capturing.. and lots... but your firewall won't let it be happen.... it's possible using Remote adminiostration tools....

There are several ways to do it.
1. One can use snifer, is software which can gather info secretly and send it to its author . U will get a confirmation message if u wan2 download it or not. Once u download its U R GONE.
2. JAVA script can be used for this job.

You could direct connect for whatever reason, and grab their IP address that way. That's nothing big though. Other than that, probably not.
Check the latest bug and exploit places, see if anyone's discovered anything.

If you're using a firewall and keep your antivirus and antispyware software up do date, there is little chance of anyone doing that.
