It's really sad that people get chastised and ridiculed for standing up for what they believe.

Morality is part of every culture, and always has been. What constitutes moral behavior may vary with century and continent, but the concept of a moral code is fundamental to every society that has ever existed.

I think it's great that groups teach people how to live in society, and how to follow a moral and ethical code. I don't think it's great that certain groups try to impose their morality on everyone else as a matter of law.

That's the distinction that people really need to start understanding. A moral code is personal, often being derived from the morality of your chosen religion. And everyone is Constitutionally entitled to their beliefs over what is moral and what is not.

But! That doesn't mean that religious morality can or should be imposed on others as a matter of law. The same rights that guarantee everyone can have their own moral conscience also guarantee that no one set of moral values is any better than any other.

People need to stop picking fights. They need to respect others who have strong beliefs, even if those beliefs are different. But it's a two way street. Those who have strong beliefs need to respect those who disagree with them, and not try to impose their beliefs on others, regardless of who happens to be in the majority at the moment.
