how can i cash a check issued to a different person?

i got a check issued to my mom....she's currently traveling abroad... and i need to either deposit or cash it myself... is there anyway to do this?

Endorse it "For Deposit Only" and you should be able to deposit it no problem. You can't cash it, unless it's endorsed over to you.

The only way to cash a check that is not made out to you is to have the person sign it first and then you (a double endorsement). But I wouldn't recommend forging the signature if that's what you were thinking, unless you want to do the jailhouse rock. I would go for the deposit like the other's said.

Okay, let me see if I understand. If you have a checking account and write checks that exceed what is actually in the account, than YOU are responsible. Now, if someone forges your signature on a check and uses it to purchase something or for cash, then the forger is going to jail and you have to work it out with the bank to get all your money back. Other then those two scenarios, I am not sure what you are getting at.

No. She has to sign it, then it becomes a negotiable instrument, meaning you can sign it and cash it. You could deposit it into her account. Your bank should have a stamp saying "Credited to the Account of the Payee" which would replace your mother's signature.

you can deposit at your bank- maybe- by writing for deposit only. My bank will not let us do that unless the check belongs to someone noted on the account.

Your mother will return and she can do it then, or ask the person that wrote the check to make it out to you.
When they quit laughing put your mothers check in a safe place for her return !.
