Simon is not only brutally honest, he really does know music, voice quality, pitch, tone, etc. He could be referring to quite a few so called singers or 'artists' out there. There are many singers who really don't have a great voice, but have a knack for holding a tune and good pitch, and others that totally misuse a true gift by not using control, etc. (Love Simon's and now my favourite line: "A complete and utter mess!").

Everyone always says Simon is so brutally honest....and he may be, but to be honest American Idol, with a few exceptions, showcases, what I would call "diva pop." Simon seems to have a narrow range of music he likes, and he only seems to like people that are stellar within that genre. Most people famous for their music, whether, rock, heavy metal , country, ska, reggae, jazz, would not be palatable to Simon. His view of music seems so narrow, I don't think he likes hardly any singers at all, unless they can make him money, and sing like Mariah or Whitney.
