Way way back in the ancient Roman times is the earliest recorded documents of music and musical instruments. There was no tonality like we know it now, because that didn't come about until the music capital was around Venice, probably around the Baroque era, before 1750. Bach was the one to bring "even tempered keyboards" to the world, but writing fugues in all of the 12 major and minor keys. Music can't really be said "invented" at anytime, just because music is the organization of sounds by someone or something. And sounds pretty much has been around since the beginning of time. But the Roman Empire is the earliest use we know.

Since the first man hit a stone with a stick or blew through a hollowed branch.

By the way, music was not invented. It has always been there to be discovered and still is being discovered. Like Ben Franlin and electricity.

Greek philosophers and medieval theorists defined music as tones ordered horizontally melodies, and vertically as harmonies. Music theory, within this realm, is studied with the presupposition that music is orderly and often pleasant to hear. However, in the 20th century, composers challenged the notion that music had to be pleasant by creating music that explored harsher, darker timbres.

I wouldnt say it was invented, i would say it was developed and probably came from passing wind, you know a bunch of kids having a laugh and doing it in rhythm and harmony, given that, that was probably one of the original sounds apart from burping. or slapping the misses :)
