Liberals fought for civil rights for all races, so it wouldn't pass the laugh test to call the K.K.K. "liberals."
If you consider the preservation of racist laws and cultural mores the backbone of the K.K.K.'s platform, then that group would be trying to preserve, or ressurect, traditions in this nation. Sounds pretty "conservative" to me.

Yes, they are at the far right end of conservatism; reactionary and fascist.
The political spectrum can be simplified somewhat.
Far left- communists, socialists, anarchists
Left- liberals
Center- moderates, neoliberals, libertarians
Right- conservatives
Far right- reactionaries, fascists, neocons
It might be noted that after the Civil War the south embraced the democratic party until the 1968 when Nixon initiated the "southern strategy" which Reagan rode to victory in 1980. African-Americans embraced the republican party until the 1930s when FDR initiated the New Deal which was the beginning of the liberal democratic party and its successes until 1968.

Robert Byrd ISN'T Gov of West Virgina. He is a SENATOR from W.V. Also he is no longer a member of the Klan, at least no longer registered member. If you listen and believe him he claims it was his biggest mistake. I don't really buy it because he is saying it as a politican. As was said the KKK is a reactionary group. If you put them under a list they would be hard to define. They are actually more Nazis which would be LIBERAL.

Actually, the KKK are known as "reactionary" groups, in which the group of people wishes to revert back to the ways of the past, I.E. slavery, oppression, etc. They obviously aren't a liberal group, but to call them conservative would be not quite correct either. They are so extremely conservative that they are called reactionary.
And if someone is extremely, extremely liberal, they would be known as "radical". These are technical terms, and are essentially opposites.

In one sense, but it's interesting to note that historically speaking the KKK was solidly Democratic. It was the Republicans who led the charge in emancipation and equal rights legislation. The KKK was so anti-equal rights and such a powerful force that the Democrats referred to their territory as the "Solid South".
